Urban League Honors Young & Gifted
The Columbia Urban League’s annual Young and Gifted Awards, a 35+ year tradition, celebrated Black History Month by recognizing approximately 600 high-achieving African-American high school seniors from 11 South Carolina counties. The program, which emphasizes achievement as a key legacy of Black History, is the state’s largest recognition of African-American student success. This year’s event, Keeping the Legacy Alive, honored students with a 3.0 GPA or higher in academics, the arts, leadership, technology, athletics, and especially STEM fields.
U.S. Navy Visits Richland Northeast
Thanks to Master Guns Gaston, the U.S. Navy brought its “Strike Group” mobile mixed-reality experience to Richland Northeast High School to promote STEM careers. This immersive program features:
- “All Hands”: A virtual reality simulation where students work as a team to launch a jet from an aircraft carrier.
- “Support”: An interactive map showcasing the Navy’s global humanitarian missions.
- “Fly”: A flight simulator where students learn to fly an F-35C jet, complete missions, and land on an aircraft carrier.
The Navy aims to show students the exciting and technologically advanced nature of STEM careers within the Navy, emphasizing adventure, teamwork, and support. We appreciate them for helping our students understand what a STEM Career in the Navy could provide using more realistic methods.
